I was just talking to Sab about Nirvana the other day and how the band has been the inspiration of much of the junk that is passed off as rock today. Back when I was little, I used to have a walkman and used to buy casette tapes to play with my Aiwa walkman. I remember, the first casette I ever bought was Nirvana’s Nevermind. (I had Weird Al’s spoof too!)
There was an MTV countdown or something on the top songs of the 90s. The top five had Backstreet Boys! Then again, they weren’t that bad. They weren’t that bad at all. Anyway what was the number one song on the chart? You guessed it - Smells Like Teen Spirit. Anybody knows what that song is about? An albino, a mosquito… Yeah, Yeah…
It’s a pity that he died so young. I mean, he had, potentially, at least 20 more years of good song writing and singing. But, is he a legend only because he died? I don’t think so. He was already approaching that status when death became him. The unplugged album remains one of the best albums ever. Right up there with Ash’s 1977. Yep, Jeff Buckley he isn’t.
They, who ever they are, say that pressure is the reason behind the Drug Rehab stints, the Alcohol rehab stints, and the Dual Diagnosis rehab stints. I don’t think so. Maybe to be a creative genius, one of the requirements is to be slightly unstable. Think of it. Michael H from INXS, Michael Jackson, Madonna etc. All whack jobs. It makes sense - to be creative involves thinking out of the box. What better way to do that than to actually be out of the box yourself?
I can be quite a nutter too sometimes. Maybe I should write a song. Then I’ll shoot myself. Not with a gun of course. What are you thinking? With crack and acid.
